Traditional vs. Internet Marketing - Bloggers Network

?

?

Internet marketing really is a field of its own and does not seem to follow traditional marketing rules. The persuasive methods used to try and entice customers in retail stores or in television adverts for example, do not necessarily work online. In retail environment for instance, where customers are primed and ready to purchase the use of signals such as the association of red with discount may work, in the cyber world however, the same technique may not necessarily trigger the same reaction.

?

Pick the Right Topic

The mentality and cognitive processes of Internet users need to be tapped into and exploited. Otherwise, the advertising and/or promotional techniques used will just be a wasted effort. One needs to remember that when browsing the Internet people are not necessarily in an emotional buying state browsing for retail shopping, rather, could very well be just looking for information relevant to a certain subject.

Google?s?Zeitgeist 2010 List, shows a wide range of most searched keywords. These most searched keywords reflect what people really want, and in my opinion, a good business strategy would be to take a more comprehensive look into the list, pick a few of the topics relevant to your online business, build a short competitive analysis for each category and then integrate the least competitive into your online business to be able to?funnel the traffic to an eventual sale.

?iPad? as an example is the most searched?keyword?in the US, if you have an online store selling computer accessories for example, and just for the sake of conversation, assuming a low competition in iPad accessories market, it would then be a great idea to start selling iPad accessories in your online store. If you are a technology blogger and rely heavily on Affiliate Marketing or online ads for your revenue, then may be it is time to start blogging about iPad tips & tricks, updates, accessories, app reviews, etc.

?

Internet Users Short Attention Span

The time an average online user spends on webpage is measured in seconds. Online businesses need to increase their Internet users??attention span, that could be through more exciting topics, YouTube videos, Social Media interaction, addressing a specific?niche, and most importantly less distracting ads in your web site. There is nothing wrong with having a few ads on your webpage, but having too much page space solely for online ads is not only annoying to Internet users, but also distracting and could actually send the wrong message about your site.

Product reviews although takes significant time and resources to put together, they are one major source of traffic to your page, especially when done right and incorporated into Google?s search engine, conversion rate becomes significantly higher. Author Review is a great WordPress Plugin that provides eye catching Google search results.?The fact of the matter is, unless a consumer has specifically come to a site looking for a certain item, it is hard to convert traffic to sales. This is why the use of banner adverts and direct email marketing is becoming less common.

?

The older traditional direct advertising methods are being replaced with online presence marketing. Social media is a popular way of building up an online presence and engaging interest in a brand. Internet consumers despise having adverts shoved down their throats, and so businesses need to approach them more subtly. Offering indirect value and transferring informational loyalty to physical sales.

Is it really easy to hack NASA computers?

A NASA official recently stated that a stolen laptop contained algorithms used to control the International Space Station. This incident is one of many breaches of NASA's security that have occurred over the past two years.

Speaking before Congress on Wednesday, NASA's Inspector General admitted that an unencrypted laptop that was stolen last year contained codes for controlling the International Space Station.

This isn't the first report of a NASA device, such as a cell phone or a laptop, being compromised. Between 2009 and 2011 the agency reported the loss or theft of 48 devices, some of which housed personal employee information along with proprietary technical details and important financial data.

Yet this is only a small part of a much larger problem that has been troubling NASA for the past two years.

Last week, the investigative panel of House Committee on Science, Space and Technology held a hearing to examine NASA's exposure to cyberattacks and information theft. In a written statement to the committee, NASA's Inspector General, Paul K. Martin, told the panel that between 2010 and 2011, "NASA reported 5,408 computer security incidents that resulted in the installation of malicious software on or unauthorized access to its systems."

It's difficult to measure NASA's data security problems against those of other federal agencies. "NASA OIG is the only Office of Inspector General that regularly conducts international network intrusion cases," read Martin's statement. "[T]his fact could skew perceptions with regard to NASA?s relative rate of significant intrusion events compared to other agencies."

NASA is taking steps to guard its data, a task that is not proving easy. Perhaps the most fundamental impediment to NASA's security upgrade is the sheer size of the agency. Information in NASA is constantly cycling around 550 individual networks that span the globe. Hundreds of thousands of people, including NASA personnel, contractors, academics, and members of the public access and communicate through these networks.

NASA spends over $1.5 billion on information technology each year, $58 million of which is allotted for security.

The official charged with overseeing the activity of these networks ? Chief Information Officer Linda Y. Curteon ? lacks access to key information about it. What's worse, when the CIO does identify a problem, she does not always have the proper authority to deal with it.

NASA currently monitors its networks with a "snap-shot" model, where updates on security are only given every so often, much like a baby monitor that broadcasts only for a few minutes each hour. The time between updates is a window of opportunity for potential hackers. For years, NASA has been trying to adopt a continuous security model.

The loss or theft of NASA's mobile devices would not be such a threat to security if the agency knew what sensitive information was stored on them, and that the devices were encrypted. During the hearing, Martin stated that 99% of these devices were not.

These many problems have rendered NASA vulnerable to much more serious threats, such as large-scale, sophisticated cyber-attacks.

"The individuals or nations behind these attacks are typically well organized and well funded and often target high profile organizations like NASA," Martin said. There were 47 such attacks on NASA in 2011, 13 of which were successful. During one attack, intruders acquired the credentials of 150 employees who had access to NASA's systems. In another, attackers, operating from a Chinese-based IP address, gained access to key systems of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and high-profile user accounts. "In other words," said Martin, "the attackers had full functional control over these networks."

NASA's internal investigations have suggested that the sophistication of cyber-attacks is increasing. Some have even involved large foreign companies and underground internet-service providers. The recent spate of thefts and intrusions seems to demonstrate that online criminals have begun to see NASA's vulnerabilities as opportunities.

In defense of Cydia, the jailbreak app store

Georgia recently wrote an editorial about the frustration she's experienced using Cydia, the jailbreak app store. I'm a long time advocate of jailbreak and the benefits it brings with it. While Cydia may not be perfect, and it definitely isn't the same experience as using Apple's App Store, there are reasons for why it works the way it does, and some huge advantages that come along with it.

Sell Almost Anything With A Modern Online Auction | Free ...

Auctioneers and their clients face a ?perfect storm? these days. A flood of merchandise from the G.I. Generation is entering the market just as their Baby Boomer children begin to retire and downsize their own property. This property must be marketed primarily to younger generations, who show little interest in antiques and collectibles. Adding to this ?perfect storm? are continuing tough economic conditions.

So of course the first focus of the modern auctioneer is to strive to obtain the best sale price for these treasures in a slow market. The second focus is to work with clients dealing with a range of products such as newer furniture, tools, and household goods which were not sold in any prior estate auctions.

As attendance and bids began to decline, auctioneers realized that survival meant trying different things. One thing that some auctioneers started using was live Internet bidding which would bring in buyers from other parts of the country. During some live auctions, the crowd in the gallery had finished bidding on an item but Internet-based bidders continued to bid up the item. Of course it didn?t take long for auctioneers to realize this modern step could even lead to online only auctions.

The process is very straight forward. The auctioneer goes through a client?s home or business and creates onsite auction ?lots? (one item or a group of items being sold as a single unit). They take six high resolution photos of each ?lot? and describe the lot in a catalog created on a laptop computer. Photos and the catalog are uploaded into a virtual auction at the firm?s bidding website.

These auctions are marketed via email blasts to approximately 40,000 unique buyers who have registered directly with the company. They are also posted on major Internet auction portals. Registered bidders bid 24/7 from the comfort of home and office computers or smart phones.

These auctions even have a dynamic ending similar to live auctions. In other words, if a bidder puts in a new bid within 2 minutes of the close of an auction, the auction is automatically extended for 2 more minutes to allow other bidders to place a counter bid.

Online Only Auctions are now auctioning a huge range of personal property, real estate, industrial and commercial equipment, vehicles, etc. They truly sell the earth and everything on it.

Paul Stansel is known as the CT Auction Guy. He offers live auctions and online auctions. He travels throughout New England, where he has conducted hundreds of successful estate & personal property auctions, benefit & fundraising events, and commercial/business auctions. You can register for CT Auction Guy?s upcoming auctions on his website.

Sales Training And Prospecting Tips To Increase Sales With Actions ...

Sales training and prospecting tips from the unbelievable sites I witnessed while watching window fitters working on my house. I recently had new windows fitted and while watching what happened I saw some fantastic sales prospecting techniques that just naturally happened because of how prospects think and act. Forget classroom sales prospecting skills you learn on courses, I saw a steady flow of sales prospects that would fill any sales person?s diary and make their target for the month. I?m now adapting these techniques with my working sales teams and you can fill your diary or grow your small business sales by doing the same.

The front of my house is on a busy lane that leads to the local shops and throughout the day many people passed by and saw the two guys installing my new windows. I saw people slowing down and stopping to look towards the house and the work being done. Some took the contact details from the side of the window fitter?s truck, and many others stopped to ask the guys questions about windows and for prices for repairs or renewals. I have to admit I cringed as I listened to the window guys responding to these passing sales prospects. They were excellent window fitters but not salesmen.

What I learned was the marketing power this situation created. This was far more effective than expensive T.V. or newspaper advertising. It triggered a reaction from anyone passing that had the slightest need for the guy?s services. This was a sales person?s dream, prospects queuing up to talk to someone. It got to the point where it was stopping the guys from working and they didn?t have the time to deal with all these people. What a waste of sales opportunities, I bet there are home improvement direct sales people that work all month to get that many prospects, more on that later.

There are several reasons why these prospects stopped and talked to the working window fitters, and within these reasons we can find valuable sales training and prospecting ideas.

The main reason people felt comfortable was that someone else has taken the first action and decided these professionals were the ones to contact and employ. So the prospects follow some one else?s first action.

Another reason is that these were working tradesmen not salesmen. When a windows salesman knocks on your door they are doing it for their benefit. When you stop a working guy in the street you are doing it for your benefit. Imagine what a sales person could have done with all those leads.

Buyers will always take the easiest actions. Which is easiest, searching through adverts, directories, and the internet and having to make a decision on which company to contact. Then speaking to someone on a sales line and waiting to be ambushed into agreeing to a sales appointment or even a sale. Or, stopping for a casual chat with a working guy that you can see actually knows what he?s talking about? If you wanted information and advice about having new windows fitted who would you talk to. A guy in overalls that fits windows everyday or a smart suited salesperson that knows more about the credit agreement than the windows? So what sales training lessons can we learn from the actions of the passing sales prospects and my window fitters? Without knowing your line of business it?s difficult to give precise sales tips. But consider the following ideas and think how you could adapt them for your sales role.

If you were a sales person for the company my window fitters worked for how about getting your hands dirty and spending some time with the guys fitting the windows. Put on some overalls and talk to all the passing prospects that want information. From what I saw outside my home I guarantee you will fill your sales diary.

Small business sales can be boosted by making all your front line people sales motivated. Put a reward scheme in place and supply every one of your staff with sales and information literature. Give them a prospect pad to take details of any potential sales opportunities, and reward them for every sale that they generate.

Sales people are perceived as doing their job and contacting people for their own benefit. Working people in non sales roles are viewed as being able to offer information that will benefit the buyer. If you?re a sales person how do your prospects perceive you? What can you do to be seen as someone that can benefit the buyer, and how will you get a queue of prospects wanting to talk to you.

SA Olympic team seeks medals in five events - Sport - Mail ...

The South African Olympic team's medals are expected to come from five sporting codes at the London Games in July and August, according to a report on Wednesday.

"The medals would come from swimming, athletics, and maybe cycling, canoeing and rowing," South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) CEO Tubby Reddy told the Cape Times.

Reddy said Sascoc had maintained its vision of bagging 12 medals in London, which was created after the team won a lone silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Sascoc had spent R34-million on preparations for the Olympics and R15-million more to "deliver the team", he told the newspaper after the committee briefed Parliament's sport and recreation portfolio committee on Wednesday.

He said just over 100 athletes would be sent to the Games, but this could change if more sporting codes qualified.

The Olympic first team and paralympic team would be announced in June, and the Olympic second team in July. -- Sapa
